Other Therapies

Ultrasound It is a therapeutic treatment using high frequency sound waves administered in the region of soft tissue. Ultrasound waves penetrate the tissues deep in the body creating a heat response. These vibrations and heat help break down and disperse unhealthy calcium and other hard tissue accumulations. Ultrasound treatment can usually be administered directly to the area of complaint. The rise in temperature, increases blood flow, relaxes muscle spasms, massages damaged tissues, and speeds the healing process.

Electrical muscle stimulation Small amounts of electrical current are induced into affected tissue to decrease spasticity and reduce swelling. This widely used technique safely strengthens muscles and helps reduce painful symptoms. EMS reduces pain sensation, helps decrease swelling, promotes general muscle tone, and speeds the healing process.

Intersegmental Traction In this form of treatment the patient lies face up as a system of rollers move about the back, all the while stretching and massaging the muscles in the back. Chiropractors may use other traction devices that stretch the spine, decompress the discs and reduce the pressure on the nerve roots.

Patient education Dr. Thomas may advise a variety of lifestyle modifications, including diet and nutritional programs, self-care and coping strategies, exercise or posture improvement programs.

Heat Moist heat applied to the area will increase circulation, release muscular hypertonicity and spasms and facilitate increased range of motion/joint function in the area of application.

Cold Treating the area of discomfort with ice will help to manage pain and inflammation

Exercise Dr. Thomas will often provide patients with instructions for an exercise program focusing on stretching and strengthening the injured area. For more information, see Exercise and Chiropractic Therapy.
